What is a frequency converter?

A frequency converter is an online tool that lets you quickly and accurately convert between frequency units. It supports hertz, kilohertz, megahertz, gigahertz and revolutions per minute (RPM).

What is frequency?

Frequency is the number of occurrences of a repeating event per unit of time. It is measured in hertz (Hz), where one hertz equals one cycle per second. Frequency is fundamental in fields like radio communication, music, electronics and mechanical engineering.

What are the frequency conversion formulas?

Key frequency conversion formulas:

  • 1 kilohertz (kHz) = 1000 hertz (Hz)
  • 1 megahertz (MHz) = 1,000,000 hertz
  • 1 gigahertz (GHz) = 1,000,000,000 hertz
  • 1 RPM = 1/60 hertz
  • 60 RPM = 1 hertz

Frequency conversion examples

Radio: 101.5 MHz = 101,500 kHz. A typical FM radio station frequency.

Processor: 3.5 GHz = 3500 MHz. A modern computer processor clock speed.

Music: 440 Hz = 0.44 kHz. The standard tuning frequency for the note A4, used to tune musical instruments.

RPM and hertz

RPM (revolutions per minute) is commonly used for motors, engines and spinning disks. To convert RPM to hertz, divide by 60. For example, a washing machine spinning at 1200 RPM operates at 20 Hz.

When to use a frequency converter?

A frequency converter is useful when working with radio equipment, comparing computer processor speeds, tuning musical instruments, understanding motor specifications or studying wave phenomena in physics.
